HOW BAD IS HONG KONG'S WASTE PROBLEM?

In 2018, the recycling rate was 30%. LOWEST in the last 20 years

We are throwing away 11,428 tonnes of municipal solid waste into our landfills per day, or 4.17 millions tonnes per year.

Per capita, we are throwing away 1.53kg of waste per day. Almost double of that Tokyo, and currently, we are solely reliant on three landfills.

Compared to other asian cities Hong Kong's recycling rate lacks behind that of Singapore with the overall recycling rate 30% and 61% respectively. Our recycling rate for paper, glass and metal is lower than that of Singapore. But Hong Kong's plastic recycling rate is 14% compared to 7% in Singapore

THE THREE LANDFILLS WE CURRENTLY USES IS THE SAME AS 379 FOOTBALL FIELDS

IF WE BREAK DOWN THE STATISTICS WE FIND THAT

PLASTIC RECYCLING RATE: 14%
GLASS RECYCLING RATE: 7%
PAPER RECYCLING RATE: 50%
METAL RECYCLING RAT: 91%

The amount of plastic that ends up in our landfills per day is the same as the weight of 387 light buses.

We are throwing the equivalent of 658,000 empty wine bottles a day into our landfills which could otherwise be turned into other useful raw materials like glass bricks.
